5. “The ball never hit the court!”

Opponent: San Diego St.

In the game of basketball, going back to the days it was televised in black-and-white, the best poetry in motion often comes when a team can cover a great distance and create a scoring opportunity without the need for a single dribble.

Perhaps no better example of this concept exists than the one that came during the Blue Devils’ win over San Diego St. in the first round of the Maui Invitational a few days before Thanksgiving.

Six minutes into the second half and the Blue Devils looking to further build upon their 67-44 advantage, Cam Reddish came down with a rebound off a miss by the Aztecs. The freshman forward turned and hit Jones with a chest pass near midcourt.

And in typical Jones fashion, the point guard instantly made the best basketball decision, which didn’t include dribbling. He used a sharp chest pass of his own — a bullet — to hit White in stride on his way to the basket.

White simply laid it in, but the play as a whole — rightly No. 1 on the video below — left ESPN’s Dan Shulman and Jay Bilas in awe of what they just saw.

Bilas: “That was beautiful. What a spectacular pass from Tre Jones!”

Shulman: “The ball never hit the court!”
