Duke Basketball: Five-star 2020 SG B.J. Boston set to visit Duke this week

Is it possible the Duke basketball program could receive a commitment from a player in the class of 2020 before it nabs its first recruit for 2019?

Class of 2020 shooting guard B.J. Boston — listed as Brandon Boston Jr. on some sites — has only lined up one official visit to date, and that will occur on Friday when the Duke basketball coaches welcome the five-star recruit to Durham.

The early visit by Boston, who is considered the 14th-best prospect in his class by 247Sports’ composite rankings, could be an indication that he plans to be a rare recruit to commit to a school before the start of his junior season.

If Boston does soon tell coach Mike Krzyzewski that he wants to be a Blue Devil, he could instantly give Duke’s 2020 class more substance than its 2019 class.

The Blue Devils, after facing rejections from guards Bryan Antoine and Nico Mannion last week, still do not have a commitment from a current high school senior.

Even though Boston would not be donning a Duke jersey until more than two years from now, a commitment from the 6-foot-6, 175-pound native of Atlanta, Ga., would at least provide the coaching staff with some good news on the recruiting front. Maybe the spark would help get the ball rolling with the 2019 class.

If nothing else, though, a commitment from Boston would give the Blue Devils a talented guard who may bulk up and be able to play multiple positions by the time he would arrive in Durham.

Boston is long — his wingspan is several inches more than his height — but not yet strong.

He has the ability to find openings in a halfcourt set and to find the bottom of the net when he pulls the trigger from the outside. However, Boston does not yet possess the strength to impose his will when facing a physical defender.

Considering he is only a couple of years removed from being a middle schooler, though, his slim upper body should be of no concern to the Duke basketball coaches.

The only concern in Durham right now should stem from the fact that it has been about eight months since the program has received news of a commitment from any recruit (current freshman Zion Williamson was the last to commit, and that was way back in January).
