Duke Basketball: Two Freshmen Named High School All-Americans
By Chris Brown
Incoming Duke freshmen Wendell Carter and Trevon Duval were recently announced as First Team SLAM High School All-Americans.
SLAM Magazine recently released their top 5 high school prospects in this year’s senior class. Two incoming Duke Basketball players, forward Wendell Carter, Jr. and point guard Trevon Duval, were named to SLAM’s High School All-American First Team based on their performance with their high school, AAU, and exhibition games this season.
Carter is an incoming Blue Devil who committed to Duke during the NCAA early signing period. At 6-9 and 245 pounds, he will be able to make a huge impact for the Blue Devils “in the paint and from distance” next season. The Georgia native led Pace Academy to the state title this season and dominated averaging 22.7 points, 15.5 rebounds, and 5.8 blocks per game.
Duval was a late addition for the Blue Devils, commiting to join Duke Basketball earlier this month. He’s ranked as the top high school point guard recruit in the country because of his “athleticism and explosiveness“. Despite growing up in NY and Delaware, Trevon Duval dominated averaging 16.2 points and 7.7 assists this season for IMG Academy in Florida.

Duke was the only program to have multiple incoming players named to SLAM’s All-American First Team this year. Wendell Carter and Trevon Duval were joined by 5-star prospects DeAndre Ayton (Arizona), Mohamed Bamba (Texas), and Michael Porter, Jr. (Missouri). The Blue Devils also had late interest from Bamba, the nation’s top high school center, but recently he ultimately decided to join the Longhorns in the fall.
Both Trevon Duval and Wendell Carter will play huge roles for the Blue Devils and fill the void left by key player departures. Duval will most likely start at point guard for the Blue Devils, coming in as a true PG to be the primary ball-handler and playmaker to fill in for NBA-bound Frank Jackson. Carter arrives as the presumed replacement at small forward and small-ball power forward for Jayson Tatum who’s projected to be NBA lottery pick this year

Carter and Duval will join incoming prospects Gary Trent, Alex O’Connell, Jordan Goldwire, and Jordan Goldwire as freshmen at Duke next season. Congrats to Wendell Carter and Trevon Duval on earning high school All-America honors and we’re looking forward to seeing them on the court for the Blue Devils next season.
