The Duke Basketball team currently has two captains, Javin DeLaurier and Jack White, but a third should be added before the season in Tre Jones.

Tre Jones wants to win a National Championship at Duke very bad.

It’s one of the main reasons he returned to Durham instead of opting to enter the 2019 NBA Draft like his three fellow freshmen.

Because of Jones’ play on the court and leadership both on and off the court, Mike Krzyzewski should name Tre Jones as a co-captain of the 2019-20 team.

If Jones does become a captain, he will join seniors Javin DeLaurier and Jack White with the honor, a position both players held last season.

Duke has not had three captains on a team since the 2016-2017 season when Coach K selected Grayson Allen, Amile Jefferson, and Matt Jones to lead the Blue Devils, but the title of captain was stripped from Allen after an incident mid-way through the season against Elon.

Krzyzewski also opted to go three captains in the 2015-16 season with Marshall Plumlee along side of Jefferson and Jones.

Entering his sophomore year, Jones is still considered as an ‘underclassman’ and Duke doesn’t often select sophomores to be captain on the Men’s Basketball team and never would Coach K pick a freshman.

In the past Krzyzewski has said the point guard is an extension of him on the court and who better to join Javin DeLaurier and Jack White as a captain than the second year point guard who will shoulder the weight of this season’s expectations.

As a freshman, Jones helped Duke win an ACC Championship and into a berth in the Elite Eight, coming one point shy of making the Final Four.

The Apple Valley, Minnesota native played, and started, 36 games last season averaging 9.4 points, 3.8 rebounds, 5.3 assists, and 1.9 steals per game in 34.2 minutes while also averaging just 1.5 turnovers per game.

Jones shot 41.4% from the field and 75.8% from the free throw line in his freshman campaign.

Tre Jones would be the perfect captain for the 2019-20 Duke Blue Devils and Mike Krzyzewski should make the announcement that he will join Javin DeLaurier and Jack White as captains for the upcoming season.
