Sacramento Kings waive former Duke basketball one-and-done DJ Steward
On Tuesday, the Sacramento Kings announced that they waived DJ Steward. The 20-year-old had signed an Exhibit 10 deal but then saw limited playing time during the NBA Summer League action in August.
And he played in only one preseason game for the Kings, drawing only four minutes while coming away with two points and two assists.
Steward, a newcomer in Durham only a year ago who was a full-time starter alongside Matthew Hurt for the 2020-21 Blue Devils, also went undrafted in July. The 6-foot-2, 165-pound combo guard averaged a respectable 13.0 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per game at Duke.
Yet keep in mind, as was the case with Hurt, Steward compiled those stats for a team that finished with a 13-11 record. The squad became the program’s first in more than 25 years to fall short of an NCAA Tournament bid.
