Duke basketball recruiting prospect Dariq Whitehead

Montverde (Fla.) five-star small forward Dariq Whitehead is the Duke basketball program’s first scheduled official visitor from the 2022 class. The 6-foot-8, 205-pound versatile athlete, who ranks the highest among current Blue Devil targets at No. 8 overall on the 247Sports 2022 Composite, is set to be on campus next weekend.

A couple of days after Mike Krzyzewski’s Wednesday announcement of both his impending retirement and the naming of Jon Scheyer as the first new head man in Durham since 1980, Whitehead said the following during his chat with SI recruiting insider Jason Jordan:

“I have always had a lot of respect for what Coach K did at Duke. How can you not? But Duke is Duke. It doesn’t really change anything for me with him leaving.”

Whitehead also noted that Scheyer and the other former 2010 national champ on the staff, first-year full-fledged assistant coach Nolan Smith, were both in his ear around the time of the news:

“Coach Scheyer and Coach Nolan called me twice both days, just talking me through everything. I trust Coach Scheyer 100 percent as a head coach. He said he couldn’t wait for me to get down there.”

And with that trust and anticipation in mind, Whitehead made quite the promising remark:

“I’m just as excited to see him as I am to see Coach K.”

The same goes for this next guy…
