Lindy’s Sports recently released their preseason honors and awards for the 2015-2016 college football season, and the Duke football team and players received a lot of recognition, especially one defense, in the conference as well as nationally from the magazine for the upcoming season.

Seven Blue Devils were selected as preseason All-ACC honorees by Lindy’s, with linebacker Kelby Brown, safety Jeremy Cash, tight end Braxton Deaver, safety and return man DeVon Edwards, and center Matt Skura receiving First Team recognition while kicker Ross Martin and punter Will Monday were named to the preseason Second Team. The five preseason First Team selections were tied with Florida State for the most in the conference over schools such as Clemson, Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech, Miami, etc..

Redshirt senior Jeremy Cash also earned his fourth preseason All-America nod, being named to Lindy’s All-American Second Team. Cash also earned preseason All-America honors from Phil Steele Magazine as a first team selection and the Sporting News and Athlon second teams. He was also ranked the 10th best NFL talent in the ACC for this season after being the only defensive back in the ACC to finish with at least 100 tackles (111), at least 10 more tackles for loss (10.5), and 5 or more sacks (5.5) last season. Cash also totaled 7 pass breakups, 5 QB pressures, caused 4 fumbles, 2 interceptions, and a fumble recovery.

  • Additionally, Lindy’s provided preseason lists of the top players at every position heading into the NCAA football season featuring several Duke players. The Blue Devils have the best safety combination in the nation, with two top 5 safeties on the roster in #2 Jeremy Cash and #5 DeVon Edwards. Duke was also the only school with multiple safeties ranked by the magazine. Other players voted in the top 10 at their position were Kelby Brown as the 6th best inside linebacker and Ross Martin as the 8th best kicker. Lindy’s also expects the Blue Devils to have one of the top defenses in the country this season, ranking their entire defensive back unit as 6th in the NCAA to go with the 8th best secondary.

The preseason projections for Duke have been somewhat mixed after the Blue Devils have appeared in three consecutive bowl games with back-to-back 9+ win seasons. Some publications like Lindy’s have high expectations for the Blue Devils while some suggest Duke will only win 7 games or finish 7th in the ACC this season. Either way, it should be an exciting season for Duke fans as college football quickly approaches and the Blue Devils kick off the season at Tulane on September 3rd.
