In this year’s ACC Volleyball preseason poll, the Duke Blue Devils were voted to finish second in the ACC for the upcoming 2014 season. Florida State was selected as the preseason favorite, receiving 196 total votes, followed closely by Duke (181 points) and UNC (180 points). The ACC volleyball preseason polls were completed by the 15 volleyball head coaches in the conference. In the American Volleyball Coaches Association Preseason poll, the Blue Devils are ranked 21st in the nation. Last season, Duke finished with an overall record of 28-5 and an 18-2 against ACC opponents, garnering it’s 11th ACC title. They also made the program’s 18th NCAA tournament appearance which is the best in the conference. Head coach Jolene Nagel, winner the 2013 ACC and AVCA All-East Coast Region Coach of the Year, will be looking to build on this success as she enters her 16th season.
Additionally, three Blue Devils were selected on the 2014 All-ACC Preseason Team. Maggie Deichmeister, Jeme Obeime and Emily Sklar are all projected to make the All-ACC team this season. Maggie Deichmeister, a senior setter, led the ACC in kills per set and assists per set last year. She also finished the season ranked 1st in the conference and 17th in the NCAA for assists per game. Senior outside hitter Jeme Obeime had a career year in 2013, totaling 376 kills, her second season with 300 or more kills, and received honorable mentions for the 2013 AVCA All-America team. Junior Emily Sklar is the reigning ACC Player of the Year and earned a spot on the AVCA All-America third team. The outside hitter was 2nd in the ACC in kills per set and totaled 405 kills, the first Duke player with over 400 kills since 2008. The Blue Devils begin the season with the Duke Invitational August 29-30 in Cameron Indoor Stadium featuring North Florida, High Point, and Furman.
