Drafted Blue Devils: Drew Van Orden

Senior pitcher Drew Van Orden was the highest drafted Blue Devil out of the three in 2014.

 


Van Orden was taken in the fifth round of the draft as the No. 154 overall pick by the Washington Nationals. Duke has cranked out pitching talent, considering Van Orden was the 24th Duke pitcher to have been drafted from the Blue Devil program. He was also the first Duke pitcher to be drafted in two years since Marcus Stroman was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays back in 2012 with the No. 22 pick.

Van Orden started in 14 games and came in out of the bull pen once during his senior season. Van Orden had a the best season of his career in 2014, having career bests in three pitching categories. He pitched 87.1 innings and had 91 strikeouts in the spring, throwing a 3.19 ERA. He was sixth in the ACC in strikeouts and was seventh in the conference in strikeouts per game. He was also ranked conference wide in opposing batting average (13th, .219) and in innings pitched (14th, 87.1).

During his freshman season back in 2011, Van Orden was on the mound on 22 occasions with four starts, going 3-6 with a 7.22 ERA. He pitched in 52.1 innings and posted 20 strikeouts. He also recorded two saves that spring.

In his sophomore season, Van Orden found himself on the mound 23 times, one more time than the previous season. He struck out 31 batters in 34 innings. He was 0-4 on the season with a 5.82 ERA.

His junior season was when things started to turn around. He was on the mound less, appearing in just 16 games, but started in 12. He struck out 56 batters in his 63.2 innings pitched. He was 3-5 with a 5.94 ERA. In the summer, he played in the California Collegiate League for the Santa Barbara Foresters. He started nine times with a 5-2 record with a 1.29 ERA. He pitched in 49 innings and recorded 65 strikeouts. He also was named to the CCL All-Star Team in 2013.
