One Duke athlete was taken in the NFL Draft, with two athletes being signed during the rookie free agency. Now that the NFL Draft is over, there are some things that need to be hashed out, such as numbers; numbers of the financial and jersey variety.
Ross Cockrell was picked by the Buffalo Bills as the No. 109 overall pick of the NFL Draft, being Duke’s earliest draft pick since 1999.
Cockrell took the Chronicle’s Daniel Carp through that Saturday morning during the NFL Draft.
“I was just waking up. The draft was on ESPN, I was getting ready to go [watch my sisters compete at the North Carolina high school track and field championships] and decided I would watch the first couple picks. I saw that Buffalo was going to come up. I told my cousin, ‘I’m going to wait until Buffalo comes up and see what they do and then I’ll go meet you out back.’ A couple minutes after I said that my phone started ringing. The Buffalo area code popped up and I was like ‘Yep, theyere they go. Right there.’ I picked up the phone at it was the GM, Mr. Doug Whaley. He asked me how I was doing and I said ‘I’m good. I’m doing a lot better now that you called me.’ He asked me how I felt about being a Buffalo Bill because they were going to take me with their next pick. I told him I would love to be up there.”
It’s known that Cockrell will be signing a four-year contract with the Bills, but the money figures hasn’t been released yet. It’s presumed that the deal will be similar to last year’s 109th pick, Green Bay’s tackle David Bakhtiari. Bakhtiari is in his second year of his four-year contract, which was a $2.6 million with a $433,312 signing bonus.
Granted, the figures are based off of last year with a player at on a different team.
Cockrell also picked his number that he’s going to be wearing during his time at the Bills. He’s going to be donning No. 29. During his time at Duke he won No. 6. Cockrell hasn’t made a public statement as to if there was a reason behind the number.
