Duke baseball looks to lengthen winning streak

The Duke Blue Devils baseball team is currently on one of the hottest winning streaks in college baseball. The Blue Devils have won nine straight games, and 11 of their past 12. The winning streak that Duke currently holds is the longest since 2008.

“Baseball is just a momentum game,” redshirt junior catcher Mike Rosenfeld said in an interview. “Our bats were kind of cold for a good part of the season. Our pitching has been fabulous the whole time. But for our bats to wake up right now is key, you just have to catch fire at the right time.”

Back in late March and early April, the Blue Devils lost 11 of 14 games before the winning streak started. Losses game against Pitt, Davidson, Liberty, and Georgia Tech. The three wins during that time period came against North Carolina.

“We really got tested from an adversity standpoint in March, and we lost a lot of close games because of it,” coach Chris Pollard said. “I kept telling our guys ‘if you’ll stick together and believe in each other, when we get healthy we’re going to have a chance to go on a run. They believed in each other, and they believed in the process, and now that we’ve gotten healthy we’ve been able to make that run.”

Duke has won against North Carolina and N.C. State this season. Both of those teams made it to the College World Series last season. That gives the Blue Devils some hope for possibly making it to the NCAA tournament. If the Blue Devils make it to Omaha, it would be the first time in over 50 years that the Blue Devils would be represented.

Rosenfeld said that ending the drought of tournament appearances “would mean everything to us.”

Their next game comes on Sunday, May 3 against the Longwood University Lancers. Duke and Longwood have played eight times total, with Duke leading the all-time series 6-1-1. The last time the two teams met was in 2012, with Duke winning on Longwood’s turf 9-2.
