Duke football changes up offseason training

Duke football looks to change up their training this season. According to a report from the Charlotte Observer, the fastest athletes are training with the track team.

“I would like to see our team built around speed at the skill positions,” Cutcliffe said in an interview with the Observer. “I would like it to be competitive speed at the level where track athletes run. It’s a great double. People have specialized young so much in sports that they miss some great experiences. I’m a fan of this when it works.”

Cutcliffe sent five of his fastest football players to the track. Redshirt senior running back Josh Snead, redshirt senior wide receiver Issac Blakeney, redshirt sophomore defensive back DeVon Edwards, redshirt sophomore wide receiver Anthony Nash, and sophomore wide receiver Ryan Smith.

Cutcliffe told the five of them about his plan after the first meeting after winter break.

“In our first meeting back,” Snead said, “Coach was telling us how he wanted to elevate the program, how we are going to be able to compete with the elite teams, and that’s teams that are in the top 10.”

Four of them (Smith, Blakeney, Edwards, and Snead) composed a 4×100 relay team. With a small amount of handoff practice before their first race, they ran the second-fastest time in Duke history, winning the meet they raced i

After that race, Snead hurt his hamstring and was replaced by senior sprinter Marcus Wright for the next meet. That grouping of athletes bested the previous time by .17 of a second, now standing as the second fastest time in school history.

Coming off of their most successful season in school history, changing things up could potentially make this upcoming season even more successful. Speed on the field is a key component to success.

Duke takes on Elon, Troy, Kansas, and Tulane for their non-conference schedule. In August, Duke fans will be able to see just how much this outside training helped their Blue Devils.
