As it goes with bowl games, guys have been getting interviewed left and right, especially with the official press conferences taking place over the last few hours.
And, because I love hearing people talk about ow much Duke football has turned around, I plucked a few quotes out of the interviews.
QB Johnny Manziel
Duke has a lot of fire & they swarm to the ball…They play hard
More strong words on the improvement of the defense. A year ago, Cincinnati players were probably daydreaming of all the yards they’d rack up. Now, people actually say genuinely nice things about the unit. I like hearing nice things; it sounds a lot better than “uhh, yeah, these guys have some good players. They’re a…good unit. Good.”
You have to give Duke credit for what they’ve done this year. We thought we would be in BCS bowl but we’re happy to be here.
This one hurts a little. “We wanted to be playing in a game people actually care about, but here we are. Congratulations to Duke, though!” Whatever, we’ve seen underachieving teams crash and burn during bowl season because they just don’t have it in them to compete in a second-tier bowl. If that ends up being the reason as to why Duke wins this game, I’ll be fine with it.
Johnny Manziel said that this year’s Duke team reminds him of his Texas A&M squad last season.

The comparison is actually there–two teams, both picked to finish near the bottom of their conferences, go on to win 10+ games and make a serious run at conference championships–, but Duke doesn’t have anywhere near the star power the Aggies had a year ago. I would feel so much better about this game if Duke had their own Johnny Manziel under center.
Head Coach Kevin Sumlin
You’re playing a very potent Duke team…they’re a very well coached football team. They’re disciplined, and they’re good.
We’re potent! We’re disciplined! We’re good! Yay!
I’ve always had a lot of respect for David (Cutcliffe) and how he does things…how he’s run his program with class and character.
Duke could’ve gone 0-12 this year and you still would’ve heard nothing but praise for Cutcliffe. He is a very respected man, and it shows with nearly everyone you talk to. Duke has a great guy leading the way.
