After blowing out Gardner-Webb at home and picking up a 17-point victory over UCLA at Madison Square Garden, Duke seemed primed to rise up in the AP Top 25 poll, but instead, the Blue Devils found themselves fall down a spot to No. 9.
Last week, the eighth spot was shared by the Blue Devils and Villanova. The Wildcats won their only game last week, blowing out Rider at home, 88-67.
While this will probably annoy plenty of you, Villanova maintaining the eighth spot while Duke fell makes sense in the grand scheme of things. Villanova is currently 11-0 and holds wins over Kansas, Iowa, and USC. It isn’t the largest of gaps, but most would consider their resume to be stronger than Duke (9-2).
It is only when you consider that the same voters had these teams tied last week, only to give Villanova the eight-point edge after Duke’s impressive week that things get a bit annoying. Still, it is nothing to get too worked up over.
The rest of the rankings can be found here. UCLA, who lost to Duke last week, fell to 34th in total votes, receiving 14.
