Duke Basketball Recruiting: Tyus Jones, Jahlil Okafor Commit to Duke

Jahlil Okafor and Tyus Jones have committed to Duke, immediately upgrading Duke’s 2014 class from disappointing to the best recruiting haul in the entire nation.

Jones, a five-star point guard from Apple Valley, Minnesota, is expected to immediately step in and be an elite point guard for Duke. Jones is widely regarded as a top-five prospect amongst recruiting sites. He stands at 6’1″ and weighs 171 lbs. From Rivals’ Eric Bossi:

Jones is a heady floor general and a tough competitor. He runs the show and is in total control of what is happening while he has the ball. He doesn’t make a lot of mistakes and shoots with accuracy. Jones isn’t the biggest or most explosive athlete but he has great body control and balance.

Okafor, a five-star center from Chicago, Illinois, is widely considered to be the best player in the nation, and has the potential to be an immediate game-changer for a Duke team that is in serious need of an elite presence in the paint. At 6’10” and 270 lbs, he has the opportunity to be Duke’s most physically-dominant big man since Shelden Williams. and Also from Rivals’ Eric Bossi:

Jahlil Okafor is one of the most skilled and poised back to the basket centers to come along in some time. He establishes and holds positions, finishes with either hand and is a great rebounder. Okafor isn’t a high flyer but fully understands how to use his skill and size advantage.
Obviously, this would be huge news for Duke regardless of the last few weeks, but with Kevon Looney and Reid Travis both fleeing to California, this was all the more important for the Blue Devils.
The two recruits made it clear early that they desired to be a packaged deal, and they never wavered from this statement throughout the process, reiterating the decision frequently.
Both men cited the presence of Coach K, amongst other things, to be one of the primary factors in their decision.
