Reports broke late last night that Reid Travis, a 6-7 230 pound low block bruiser, received a scholarship offer from Coach K. The power forward was first scouted this summer as he plays alongside prime Duke target Tyus Jones for the Howard Pulley AAU squad. Since then, his recruitment had largely been quiet until this sudden offer from the Duke coaching staff.
Several reports came in, started off by Ryan James (@RyanJamesMN), a sports writer for Gopher Illustrated, a Minnesota Rivals page.
Reid Travis just told me Duke has offered him a scholarship and he’s looking into setting an official trip.
This was later confirmed by Adam Rowe of Blue Devil Lair. Darren Wolfson, a sports anchor/reporter for a Minneapolis news station, also confirmed as well as brought the news that several high profile coaches would be meeting with Travis on Monday.
Travis is an ideal fit for Duke basketball going forward as he projects to be a four year player that shows maturity and intelligence as well as a knack for gobbling rebounds. He would offer Duke a steady performer, if a bit undersized, to support the post while Duke brings in higher profile targets like Kevon Looney and Jahlil Okafor. While the latter two are likely one and done players, Travis would offer the Duke coaching staff some stability for the 2015 season and beyond.
Many considered Stanford the front runner for his services and Minnesota as a solid number two, however, I expect all of that to change with a Duke offer in hand.
