We can pretend this is totally a picture from Florida totally losing to Duke, but it isn't.

Duke Baseball Drops Final Two Games of Florida Series

The Duke Blue Devils surprised everyone on Friday, defeating the 13th-ranked Florida Gators, 4-3, thanks to a strong pitching performance from Trent Swart and some timely hitting. They were in a perfect position to kick-start the Pollard era in impressive fashion, needing only one more win in the next two games to win the three-game series, but the team suffered a difficult 4-2 loss in Game 2 before being ran out of Gainesville in Game 3, 16-5.

The Blue Devils received another strong pitching performance in Game 2, with the bullpen surrendering just one run in 4.2 innings. The offense, however, was shut down by the Florida bullpen, managing just two hits in five innings after chasing starter Tucker Simpson after four innings of play. The lone highlight of the game for the Blue Devils came via a Chris Marconcini 2-run homer in the 4th.

Defensively, the team was a mess, committing four errors in eight innings.

Game 3

The Blue Devils took a 3-2 lead into the bottom of the sixth before the bullpen had one of the worst collapses I’ve seen in awhile. In the sixth inning, Florida scored four runs. In the seventh inning, Florida scored four runs. In the eighth inning, Florida decided to mix it up and scored six runs. In just four innings, the bullpen surrendered fourteen runs, all of which were earned. It was like watching the Bad News Bears in the beginning of the movie. It was like watching that meteorite strike Russia. It was awful.

Game ball goes to Florida 1B Zack Powers, who hit 2 grand slams and collected 9 RBIs.

Duke returns to action next weekend in a three-game series against Bucknell at home.
