Event: Matt Jones, Duke’s top 2013 recruit, and his DeSoto Eagles take on the Simeon Wolverines on ESPN.
When: December 13, 9:30pm (ET)
Want to take an early look at the future of Duke basketball? If so, find your way over to ESPN at 9:30 (ET) tonight, where SG Matt Jones, the number thirty-six overall prospect in the 2013 class, and his DeSoto Eagles will be taking on the Simeon Wolverines in Grand Prairie, Texas. Jones, a 6’4, 180 lb shooting guard, is considered by many to be one of, if not the most, pure shooters coming out of this recruiting class and has drawn comparisons to JJ Redick and Trajan Langdon from the Duke coaching staff.
If you do get a chance to tune into this game tonight, do it. Jones really is one of the better shooters in the country, in both form and execution and, like most top recruits, he is loads of fun to watch (during the AAU circuit this summer, Jones shot nearly 50% from beyond the arc). Is he as good as JJ Redick was coming out of high school? Probably not, but he isn’t tremendously far off. When Redick came to Duke, his game revolved entirely around the jumpshot, particularly three-pointers, and the rest of his game slowly began to develop over the next four seasons. I picture a similar route being taken by Jones.
Now, imagine how this Duke team will look next year with 3-point specialist Andre Dawkins returning along with the arrival of Jones. Scary, right?
