Thoughts on Georgetown/Chinese Fight

by College Basketball

As I’m sure you’ve heard by now, the Georgetown Hoyas are also in China playing some goodwill basketball, but their Thursday night game ended in a bench clearing brawl.

From what I can tell, it started when a Chinese player, forward Xu Zhonghoo, berated Georgetown head coach John Thompson as he was yelling instructions to his players. After that, things just got tense. Later, another Chinese player drew a technical foul after a hard foul, which turned into shoving and pushing between Georgetown’s Jason Clark and BAyi center Hu Ke. The benches cleared and all hell broke loose.

Two questions about the photo below.

First, who’s the dude in the khakis (a coach?) and how the hell did he get on the court before everyone else? Second, if this video was reversed and it showed five black players stopping on a Chinese player lying on the ground, what would everyone be calling those players? Thugs.

Eventually the fight was broken up, but not before fans throw bottles and chairs at the Georgetown players and coaches. As a Duke fan, I say no big deal. Sounds like every other Duke/Maryland game in College Park.

Anyhow, the SportsGrid has some video of the fight. God bless cell phone cameras.

Looking at the video, the Chinese team deserves full blame. I certainly didn’t see the whole game, but from what I keep reading, the Chinese team was looking for a fight from the start. In the end, they committed the hard foul, then their two players started the fight by attacking one player. Then because their bench was closer, it was quickly five on two.

The worst was the fact that the Chinese coaching staff failed to stop any of their players from fighting. Look at the video. The G-Town staff walls off half the team, meanwhile two or three Hoyas are being attacked by five or six Chinese players at the far end of the court, all while chairs are flying in. Look at the video. Find me one Chinese coach holding back a single Chinese player.

Since the fight, head coach John Thompson III has bee a class act (as he always has been). I give him credit. If I saw a bunch of dudes attack my players while the coaching staff does nothing, I wouldn’t be able to bite my tongue.
