ACC Top-100: No. 99 Kyle Speller

We’re counting down the ACC’s Top-100 returning players. In fact, we’re just getting started. Today we head down to Atlanta to find a walk-on who can shoot it from deep.

PLAYER: Kyle Speller
POSITION: Shooting Guard
TEAM: Georgia Tech
YEAR: Sophomore
TAPE: 6-2, 185

2010-11 STATS: None

With the loss of Iman Shumpert and Maurice Miller, Mfon Udofia will move into the starting point guard spot, along side fellow guards Glen Rice Jr. and Brian Oliver. That’s a pretty decent three-guard set, but the bench options aren’t going to wow anyone.

Since it is unlikely three-star guard Bobby Parks Jr. will actually end up in Atlanta, new coach Brian Gregory has very few legit options on the pine. This opens things up for a walk-on like Kyle Speller.

Currently, transfer Brandon Reed is the number one option off the bench. He’s the only scholarship guard on the pine, so he can fill up the shooting guard spot when Rice needs a blow. Tech also has Jason Morris, who is a forward-guard combo. Don’t forget though, the Yellow Jackets will run a three-guard set, so there is still room for others to step up.

Other than Reed and Morris, Georgia Tech has three walk-on guards (Speller, Nick Foreman and McPherson Moore) who are all vying for playing time. None of the three should be playing at this level, certainly not important minutes, but Brian Gregory doesn’t have a choice.

For now I’m picking Nick Foreman as the number one option. I think of the three he’s the most qualified combo guard, so he can actually play some minutes at the point. This means Speller and Moore will battle for the leftover minutes.

Speller only saw 90 seconds on the court last year thanks to a broken wrist, but he has good size and a strong body. The lefty is also a solid shooter, which could come in handy. Let’s not forget, this is a Yellow Jackets team that was dead last in both field goal percentage (.405) and three-point percentage (.299) last year. If there is any team in this conference that could use a shooter off the bench, it’s this squad.
